Do We Still Need The Yellow Pages For Business?

I came across this video recently and thought it was pretty interesting. For years consumers and businesses alike have used the Yellow Pages (and other versions of it) to locate businesses in their local area.

However, now that technology hands you literally thousands of results with a single 2-3 word phrase, the question is, “Do we still need the yellow pages?”

As offline marketing consultants, we see things differently than most consumers and businesses.

Most people still using the big huge yellow book utilize it to find a particular company to buy from. However we as marketing consultants can use it to clearly identify the businesses who could profit from our marketing expertise.

Here are three reasons offline marketing consultants should value the yellow pages:

  1. It gives us a fairly updated local list of businesses who want more business
  2. It shows us clearly which businesses have the resources to back up their desire for most businesses (just look at the ads in there than range from $2000 – over $10,000)
  3. It shows us exactly how to approach these businesses using their own ads (i.e. website review if they include their domain, missing a call to action, offering something for free, using direct response marketing, etc…)

So, while the yellow pages may not be a great thing for consumers who favor technology like search engines and mobile phones, it is a literal goldmine for offline marketing consultants like us to capitalize on and be able to help businesses who really want and need us!

I just came across a brand new tool to help you find local markets to take on as clients. I usually do keyword research using either Market Samurai, Traffic Travis, or Google Keywords tool but sometimes I just need a quick and easy way to find exactly what I’m looking for.

This post is short and sweet, however, don’t overlook what I’m about to suggest to you.

In fact, make a commitment to yourself that you’ll do what I’m about to tell you since it doesn’t cost you any money to implement and just takes about 5 minutes of your time.

Here it is; wherever you go throughout your day, make it a point to talk to the owner or manager every single time and ask them how business is.

This can happen wherever you eat, stop by to get milk, the gas station you fill up at, virtually anywhere you’re already at.

There’s absolutely no going out of the way for this one which makes it completely easy to do.

You’re already there so you might as well ask them how their business is and then introduce yourself as a resource for them.

Obviously, they’re going to say business is good or business is a little slow right now. Whatever they say, continue the conversation by asking questions to hear more about their business.

Most business owners like talking about what they do so give them an opportunity to do that. You’ll be amazed at the information that you’ll uncover.

Next, based on what they told you, let them know you have some ideas to help them whether they’re already busy or not and let your ideas out. In fact, give people so much value that they’ll become interested in what you do.

Amazing, huh. It really is that simple… unless of course you CHOOSE to complicate it more but that’s a whole other story completely!

Speaking For Free To Get Offline Clients

I am a firm believer that adding amazing value to anyone you come in contact with will open doors that no one can shut. So, its without saying that speaking for free to get offline clients makes complete sense.

There’s something that most of us fear; speaking in public. In fact, in recent polls, its was determined that most people are more fearful of speaking in public than of death itself. To that I say WOW!

But its that fact that really makes speaking such a great opportunity. Since most people will avoid it, its the ones that don’t and go out there speaking at any opportunity that get all the attention. They become an instant authority.

Its so powerful that I’ve personally spent $8,500 during one presentation on someone who I previously knew absolutely nothing about. They were bold enough to get in front of everyone at the event and tell their story and offer something of even greater value. I bought into it and so did many others.

What does this have to do with your offline consulting business?

Well, wouldn’t you like to have that same affect on your offline business prospects? You absolutely can.

If speaking is a new strategy that you’re gonna use to get offline clients, then I would suggest you do your first few for free. I love making money on all of my efforts, but I also know that I have to build momentum.

Here are the advantages of speaking for free:

  • People are more forgiving – if you’re just starting out, you may fumble over your words a little or say the occasional UM… People are more understanding when they are getting valuable information that they didn’t have to pay to get. (By the way, most people share the UM problem but overcome it simply by realizing when they do it.)
  • You can build your testimonials – there’s nothing better than social proof and your free speaking engagements can get those for you. Again, I said you should only start with free speaking engagements, but over time, you’ll get more comfortable doing them and you’ll have the success stories to be able to charge for them.
  • Use free speaking engagements to get valuable feedback - think about your first few speaking gigs as an opportunity to get in front of people, get clients, but also get valuable feedback. You can use this feedback to fine tune your next presentations so they are worth every dollar you charge.
  • Free gets more people in - by not charging for your speaking event, you eliminate the barrier that most people have that prevents them from going; price. You’ll be able to get more people in from the very beginning.

So, when you combine a free speaking event with the instant authority that’s generated from doing the speaking yourself, you have the winning ingredients necessary to get offline clients like clockwork.

3 Free Ways To Get Offline Clients Today

Get Offline Clients From HomeFor those of you wondering how you can start getting clients for your offline consulting business, its easier than you might think.

If you’re just getting started, it may be overwhelming to think of getting your first few clients. After all, you’ve been spending all your time learning about what to offer these offline businesses and how to get the work done or outsource the work.

But all that training will do you no good if you never get a customer that you can actually do the work for. Besides, you’ll go broke if all you’re doing is refining your skills and become the expert but no one ever knows about it.

The way I see it, there are three free and easy ways to get offline clients today! Here they are in no specific order:

1. Find out which local businesses are already advertising with Google’s Adwords. This is a complete no brainer. These offline businesses are already spending money promoting their products and services online using Google. Do you think they may be open to your services that will help them get the results they’re already looking for? Of course they are.

2. Start looking at the advertising and marketing that is all around you. I know this one seems silly but it really is a great way to get offline clients. Just the other day, I received a mailing from a local dentist office. Guess what wasn’t there; a website or a direct call to action. It just had a pretty picture, their address, and their hours of operation.

How many leads do you think this marketing piece is getting them. I would venture to say fewer than 5 for every thousands they send out. But you know what, this is the third time I get the same exact piece. What a great opportunity to walk in with one of their pieces and let them know the “5 Secrets To A Highly Converting Ad”.

If you think to yourself that you don’t have something like that, I just made it up. I used a little creativity to get in the door. That’s all you have to do just to get in front of them and show them the real value that you can provide.

3. Visit a few local Meetup groups or BNI (Business Network International) referral groups. The first few visits are absolutely free, but what you’re doing is surrounding yourself with potential clients and business referral sources all for free. Once you close your first few sales, become a paying member and your business will explode.

The way I see it, even if you charge a minimal amount just to get client from these sources, you’ll begin to build momentum to tackle those larger payout clients and get them regularly so you can be confident that having an offline consulting company is definitely a viable business.
